Originally this settler was born and bred in Italy and it is to be believed that while living in Cologne, Farina was very homesick and was looking for ways to create something that reminded him of his hometown back in Italy. In 1709, he created the first Eau de Cologne and also founded the Johann Maria Farina Gegenuber dem Julichs-Platz GmbH which today is the oldest perfume factory in the world.
